When is a Tent Fumigation Necessary?

When a colony of drywood termites invades your home, the damage they cause can quickly eat up your equity. That's why it's so important to stop these destructive pests before damage costs add up. - When powderpost beetles are detected.
Powderpost Beetles: Named for the powder-like dust they leave behind when they attack wood surfaces, powderpost beetles are second only to termites in their wood destruction abilities, so powderpost beetles' bodies allow them to slide into wood areas. Powderpost beetles lay their eggs in cracks of wood and their larvae tunnel in and fill it with the powder-like dust. Powderpost beetles are attracted to light, and they are most active at night. These beetles can destroy wood in your home - powderpost beetles often attack hardwood floors, crates, antiques, and other hardwood materials. The best method of powderpost beetle prevention is to thoroughly inspect the wood sources in your house.
What is the fumigation process?
The fumigation process takes approximately 24 to 48 hours. The Esparza Pest Control or Epest professional will tent your home with largest tarps, preparing the interior, sealing the tarps, and releasing a warning agent (chloropicrin) into the structure. Then, a certified termite technician will introduce the fumigant through a special hose attached to a cylinder located outside your home.
The fumigant will penetrate into the wood to eliminate the termites. After the fumigation process is complete, we will certify your home ready for re-entry.
Precautions
Esparza Pest Control and Epest fumigators are cautious and will take many precautions during and after the fumigation process.
- Releasing chloropicrin, the warning agent, which releases a strong odor and causes tearing of the eyes and throat, helps ensure a structure is vacated of people and pets.
- Secure the doors on your home with additional locking devices designed to prevent entry by anyone except the licensed fumigator.
- Provide a Licensed Security Guard to protect your property at night
- Use sophisticated equipment to detect when the fumigant has dissipated and help ensure your home is clear for re-entry.
Read through the following to ensure your part in the precaution steps.
The day before the fumigation…
- Water the soil up to 18 inches from the outer walls of your home to protect outdoor plants and shrubs.
- Cut back foliage, shrubbery and landscaping at least 18 inches from the structure to allow room for the tarps.
- Remember to make arrangements for overnight accommodations for you and your pets, as the process takes 24-48 hours.
- Keep in mind the fumigation may need to be rescheduled if the weather is uncooperative, high winds and rain may hinder a fumigation and cause potential danger to fumigators.
The day of the fumigation…
- Remove all plants from your home and outdoor patios.
- Evacuate all people and pets from the structure.
- Remove mattresses that are completely enveloped in plastic, such as baby mattresses with waterproof covers, or remove the covers themselves.
- Remove any food, feed, drugs and medicines as specified by your fumigator. You do not need to remove items in plastic bottles, glass bottles, metal bottles, cans or jars with the original manufacturer’s airtight seal intact. Anything that will be ingested should be removed.
